Is AI Replacing Google?

What Auto Dealers Need to Know in 2026
As of August 2026, the answer is no. AI isn't replacing Google, but it is changing how consumers research vehicles and how dealerships need to think about search visibility.
For dealers, the strategy isn't AI versus Google. It's winning both.
AI Is Changing the Research Phase
Google itself is becoming more AI-driven through Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, while shoppers are also using AI assistants such as ChatGPT to research vehicles, compare options and answer complex questions.
A 2026 automotive study of 1,600 searches found Google AI Overviews appeared in approximately:
97% of informational searches
79% of research/commercial searches
11% of transactional searches
The pattern is important: AI is most prominent when shoppers are learning and comparing. When searches become more specific and purchase-focused, traditional Google results become increasingly important.
Google Still Matters at the Bottom of the Funnel
A shopper asking, "What's the best truck for towing?" is researching. A shopper searching "used F-150 near me" is much closer to buying.
That's where inventory, geography, pricing, offers, paid search, Vehicle Ads, Maps and strong inventory merchandising remain critical.
AI can influence what to buy. Google remains extremely important when the shopper asks where can I buy it?
AI Gives Dealers Another Way to Be Found
AI also creates an opportunity that didn't exist in traditional SEO. A large-scale Ahrefs analysis found that only about 38% of URLs cited in Google AI Overviews also appeared among the first 10 search-result blocks for the same query.
In other words, a dealer doesn't necessarily need a traditional top-10 organic ranking to become part of an AI-generated answer. Useful, authoritative and locally relevant dealership content can create another path to visibility.
SEO Is Evolving, Not Disappearing
We view SEO and AI visibility as part of the same evolving strategy. Dealers still need technically strong websites, accurate inventory and business information, useful original content and clear answers to shoppers' questions.
But the question is expanding from "Where do I rank on Google?" to "Is my dealership part of the answer when consumers ask AI about vehicles, financing, service or dealers in my market?"
The Bottom Line
AI is changing the beginning and middle of the automotive shopping journey. Google remains enormously important as consumers move closer to inventory and purchase.
The winning strategy isn't AI or Google. It's AI and Google.
At JDA, our focus is making sure dealers are visible throughout that entire journey - from the first research question to the final vehicle search.
The goal is simple: make sure your dealership shows up wherever the customer asks the question.
